The Benefits Of Using A Nurse Staffing Agency

A lot of Residential Homes try to avoid using agencies, as agency staff are usually more expensive than full-time employees. But by planning ahead, and keeping the contact details of an agency or two on-hand for emergencies, using a nurse staffing agency switches from being something to avoid, to being a savvy business practice.

Let Us Show You How

In case of emergencies…

Sometimes, people don’t turn up for their shifts. They could be poorly, hungover, broken down – it doesn’t matter (although hopefully not all three, for their sakes). What matters is maintaining an appropriate number of staff at your Home, and this is where Medilink Nursing really stands out.

We specialise in securing cover in last-minute situations, so that nobody at your Home has to work a surprise night-shift when the staff handover is one colleague short of a rota. The CQC takes staffing levels seriously, and with the wellbeing of your residents in question, it really isn’t worth going short-staffed. Having a trusted & reliable nurse staffing agency (such as ourselves) on call means there’s no need to panic in these situations. Simply give us a ring, and we’ll have someone over in a jiffy.

Planned Absences

Don’t force your staff to jostle and coordinate for the best summer holiday slots, it’s bad for morale! If you’ve got staff who’d like to take the same time off, a nurse staffing agency can easily provide you with temporary staff to step in for a week or two – and it’ll put your team’s mind at ease.

Making use of temporary workers in this way also means that you don’t have to employ as many full-time staff, which will save money in the long run! If your home employs more full-time staff than it needs day-to-day (this is often because Homes like to have extra capacity in case of absences, planned or unplanned), then cutting full-time staff slightly and using temporary agency staff as-and-when necessary will end up saving you, not costing you. Not bad!

Increased Demand

Sometimes Homes experience periods of increased demand, for example if a resident’s needs change. Much like our last point, it’s cheaper to use the agency staff with a slightly higher hourly rate to respond to these temporary increases, than it is to use pay extra full-time staff year-round.

Access To A Diverse Pool Of Talent

Many of our staff are specialists in skilled areas, such as palliative care, dementia care, and 1-to-1 care. Having a selection of skilled workers available is useful in all sorts of situations.

Try Before You Buy

If you’re looking to hire a nurse full-time, then some nursing agencies (such as ourselves) have a temp-to-perm scheme. This allows Homes to take on our agency staff for a trial period, and if they like what they get, hire them! This removes a lot of the effort and risk from the hiring process, as well as removing any time-pressure that your Home may be under.

Medilink Nursing’s Experienced Staff

All of our nurse staffing agency workers require at least 2 years’ worth of relevant UK-based experience within the past 5 years, before they can join Medilink Nursing. This is to ensure that they can get straight to work even in unfamiliar Residential Homes, with minimal showing-around.

We also provide our staff with regular refresher courses as if they were full-time staff at a regular workplace (which some agencies neglect, shockingly). This includes People Moving & Handling, Infection Control, Food Hygiene, and more.

These courses are provided by our sister company, Aaron’s Department, who also provide our staff’s DBS checks. Feel free to reach out to them if you’d be interested in either of these services.
