What inspired you to pursue a career in nursing/caring?

I have always gained motivation from helping others achieve their goals. Caring offers a unique opportunity to help people work towards achieving a healthy state of wellbeing, one of the most important aspects of life.

Nurses have the opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of others. They care for people at their most vulnerable moments, and they provide comfort and support when it is needed most.
The variety of opportunities as there are many different types of nursing specialties, it offers flexibility and working in different settings such as hospitals, clinics, schools, or even in the community.
Nursing is a constantly evolving field, so there is always something new to learn.
Nurses work closely with other healthcare professionals, as well as patients and their families. This creates a strong sense of community and belonging.

Saba

Before I started my career as a carer, I was a dress designer in Pakistan. My mother-in-law suffered from dementia and I used to take care of her as she was living with me. I found out how quickly a person’s life changes. She was such a vibrant lady, but after the dementia she was so vulnerable and dependent while I was taking care of her. I found out the work was less demanding but rather more satisfying and felt really happy being able to help her.

Patience

I was inspired to be a nurse by a nurse who looked after me when I had tonsillectomy in 1960. She gave me medicine which stopped me having pain and her uniform was so clean. I just wanted to be a nurse from that day.

It is a job of a bit of a different nature, I decided to try based on my Medical background. It took me time to get used to it, I was given a chance and never knew it would last so long.

Can you share a memorable experience that made you realise you were meant to be a nurse/carer?

Aissatou

When I was younger, I had my grandma who lived with a dementia who I was involved in caring for. Although it was very sad, I learned a lot about taking care of others and how much this person got out of my care, which also made me feel fulfilled. I realised then that I wanted a career based around helping people.

Muhammad

I have helped improve the Quality Of Life of many individuals having worked as a Sports Therapist, helping to improve their health, which inspired me to become a Nurse.

Saba

As I have mentioned above while caring for my mother-in-law, and helping her in day-to-day routine I actually enjoyed being able to be helpful to others. The feeling of fulfilment and satisfaction. I think that experience made me realise that this is what I would love to do when I get the opportunity. When I shifted to the UK, I got the opportunity and here I am.

When I was ill in hospital, I was impressed by how the nurses worked and saw what they did for all of us in the ward. I really felt that I could also be able to do that kind of job.

One day, helping an elderly patient regain their independence after weeks of therapy was truly fulfilling, showing me the significance of my role.

I may say that being appreciated is the best experience. Being appreciated is not only seeing the resident that I take care of recover and say thank you. I remember a particular resident at grabbed my hand and said, ‘I’m never going to forget this. Thank you for knowing so much and being so kind.’ Nicest compliment I’ll never forget.

What aspect of your job do you find most rewarding?

Another positive aspect of working in the healthcare field is working on a team with other skilled professionals.
You’ll never grow stagnant as a healthcare worker and will always have the opportunity to learn and grow throughout your career.
This is a big reason why many people choose to pursue careers in healthcare in the first place, seeking out the satisfaction that comes from helping someone in need daily.

Helping others in need, and the sense of fulfilment, seeing the attitude and smile on the faces of service users are the most rewarding experience.

How do you handle the emotional challenge that comes with caring for others?

Aissatou

Everyone needs to be seen, heard, understood, by those around them, we also have the duties to respect their wishes, their abilities and advocate for themselves.

Nursing is a demanding profession that can take a toll on your emotional health. The following are some ways I have learnt to handle the emotional challenges that come with caring for others as a Nurse.
It is important to set boundaries between your personal and professional life. This means not taking work home with you and not letting your patients’ problems consume you. I try to make sure to get enough sleep, eat healthy/high protein and high energy foods, and take time to regularly exercise.
At times, I have found it a struggle to cope with the emotional challenges of Nursing, and as such have found it helpful to talk to a colleague/mentor who also understands the challenges that come with Nursing about my experiences on a day to day basis. If you are feeling overwhelmed or traumatized by your experiences as a Nurse, I would suggest seeking professional help from a therapist. Many nurses experience emotional challenges in their work. There are resources available to help you cope, such as support groups and online forums. Nursing is a rewarding profession, but it is important to take care of yourself both physically and emotionally.
By following these tips, you can better manage the emotional challenges of nursing and maintain a healthy work-life balance.

What do you think is the most important quality that a carer should possess?

A carer should always be respectful of their customer and where they live.

There are many important qualities that a nurse should possess:
Nurses should be compassionate and caring individuals who are able to empathize with their patients. They should be able to put themselves in their patients’ shoes and understand what they are going through.
Nurses should be patient and understanding. They should be able to deal with difficult patients and situations without getting frustrated.
Nurses should be able to communicate effectively with their patients, their colleagues, and other healthcare professionals. They should be able to explain complex medical terms in a way that is easy to understand.
Nurses should be able to think critically and solve problems. They should be able to identify and address potential problems before they become serious.
Nurses should be able to work effectively as part of a team. They should be able to collaborate with other healthcare professionals to provide the best possible care for their patients.
Nurses should be resilient and able to handle the emotional challenges of the job. They should be able to cope with stress and difficult situations without becoming overwhelmed.

Saba

There are number of qualities that are required in the profession of care industry, honesty, devotion, professionalism, punctuality, but the most important in my opinion would be empathy and gentleness, while caring for the residents.

How do you maintain a positive and compassionate attitude towards those who look after?

Aissatou

Your actions and reactions toward other individuals can determine the end result of the interaction. For example, if you are receptive and respectful to individuals’ opinions, they in return could be more open to what it is you have to say.

It is important to set boundaries between your personal and professional life. This means not taking work home with you and not letting your patients’ problems consume you.

Being gentle and while providing service, letting the service user know what you are about to do so that they feel more relaxed, there by winning their confidence.

With a good approach and understanding, professional, to be ready to help, willingness to communicate, understanding what they need and fulfill it in the best way.

Staying focused on the positive outcomes, finding joy in small achievements, and practicing empathy helps me maintain a compassionate attitude towards those I care for.

I learnt to express empathy when appropriate, showing genuine interest, listen to what residents and their loved ones say, respect resident’s need for privacy and awareness of moments that requires high levels of compassion.

Can you describe a situation where you made a significant impact on someone’s life through your care?

Aissatou

I was once in a situation where a patient was very unhappy with her personal care routine. It was my first time with that customer and the other carers didn’t provide me any information about that lady. She was yelling and demanding to see the manager. I remained calm and professional in assured the lady that I would do everything to help to resolve the issue. I spoke to the manager and we agreed on a course of action to satisfy the patient. This required some extra work on my part , as I had to get the appropriate way to diffuse the situation.

Muhammad

As a nurse was working in the hospital, I met a young lady who was struggling with her anxiety of being in the hospital. I sensed this anxiety and took the time to talk to her about this anxiety and treated her as an individual. I made sure she was comfortable and that she had everything she needed. As a result, she felt supported and cared for, and was able to cope with her anxiety. In this situation, I made a significant impact on her life by providing her with emotional support and comfort.

Saba

I would say, that person was my mother-in-law, as I was with her till her last day in this world, although she forgot who I was in the end, which was heartbreaking, but the way she looked at me her eyes said it all.

Patience

I was looking after a patient who was dying and the relatives were very anxious. I sat with them and reassured them and answered their concerns sincerely. Later when the patient passed on they thanked me and even sent me a present.

Adenike

A patient with a disability who initially felt discouraged gained confidence through our consistent support, leading them to pursue their passions with renewed determination.

Azeez

The most significant impact is supporting residents with aspects of day to day living. This includes supporting them to get dressed, eat their meals, socialise with family and friends, take up new hobbies and access education or work.

What are some of the biggest challenges you face in your role as a nurse/carer?

Aissatou

Working in a care home for the first time and the rest of the staff don’t consider you as part of the team, which leads to greater challenge.

Muhammad

Nurses face many challenges in their work. Nurses often have to work long hours and deal with a lot of patients. This can lead to fatigue, burnout, and stress. Nurses often have to deal with the emotional distress of their patients and their families. This can be difficult and emotionally draining.
Nurses often have to lift and move patients, which can be physically demanding.
Nurses often have to communicate with patients, their families, and other healthcare professionals. This can be challenging, especially when there are language barriers or cultural differences.
Despite these challenges, Nurses are dedicated professionals who provide essential care to patients. They are the backbone of the healthcare system, and their work is essential to the health and well-being of our communities.

Nurses who are facing challenges should reach out for help. There are many resources available to support nurses, such as professional organizations, employee assistance programs, and peer support groups.

Saba

Dementia patients sometimes in my opinion, pose the biggest challenge of all. Although you are providing assistance, service and helping them, but due to their mental health, simple tasks become a real challenge.

Patience

The biggest challenge I have had as a nurse is building trust and acceptance by clients. Being of colour, it has been really difficult to be accepted by both clients and colleagues as an able skilled nurse.

Balancing the demands of care, maintaining emotional resilience, and adapting to varying patient needs can be challenging, but they also contribute to personal growth.

The most challenging part of being a carer is providing comfort to a family whose loved one is critically ill. It is challenging because I have an important job to perform taking care of the Resident. At the same time, I must be compassionate and helpful to the family members that visit.

What advice would you be able to give someone considering a career in caring?

Aissatou

A good carer will be passionate about their job and do their best for the people they care for. Taking all aspects of the role and a career in care seriously, it is a professional vocation to them, not just a job.

Muhammad

Do your research: Before you decide to pursue a career in nursing, it is important to do your research and learn as much as you can about the profession. This includes understanding the different types of nursing specialties, the educational requirements, and the job outlook.
Shadow a nurse: One of the best ways to learn about nursing is to shadow a Nurse. This will give you a firsthand look at what nurses do and the challenges they face.
Volunteer at a hospital or clinic: Volunteering at a hospital or clinic is another great way to learn about Nursing. This will give you the opportunity to interact with patients and Nurses, and see firsthand the impact that Nurses have on people’s lives.
Take some pre-requisite courses: There are some pre-requisite courses that you will need to take before you can apply to Nursing school. These courses typically include biology, chemistry, anatomy and physiology.
Nursing is a rewarding career that allows you to make a difference in people’s lives. If you are considering a career in nursing, I encourage you to do your research and take the necessary steps to pursue your dream.

My advice would be to be gentle and soft with service users while providing service, patience is the most valuable trait in my opinion in this profession.

I would advise them to learn nursing skills, attain good knowledge of medical conditions, keep healthy, and establish a good support network.

Be motivated, it is worth the experience! It is a blessing to care for people who can’t help themselves!

Develop strong communication skills, cultivate empathy, and be prepared for both rewarding and challenging moments. Remember, your dedication can truly change lives.

I will advise the person to learn how to engage with people. Communication is one of the most important things to consider when choosing a career in care.
